To "Me" or Not To "Me", That Is the Question
Embracing and establishing “me” time is rare for a mother. As soon as I popped my kid out 3 years ago, priorities shifted quickly and rightfully so. Kids come first. With some guts and glory today, however, I left my mommy hat with my doorman for a “me myself and I” trip. I decided to visit my bestie out in Los Angles for a long weekend.
At first the idea seemed completely ludicrous; how could I leave my family to fend for themselves for a few days? After stocking the fridge, doing 10 loads of laundry, making play date plans left and right and consulting my shrink, I determined the stage was set for mommy-less success and the family would be ok without me. While I feel a ting of guilt jetting off to La La land, I know some anonymity and some “me” time is just what the doctor ordered for this mommy.
Today at the airport I completed a flawless, free of milk liquids security check, hoarded trashy gossip magazines instead of stuffed animals from the gift shop, fit my big boned suitcase into the overhead without help from the huz and handled take off without playing “up in the airplane” with my tot! I was unreachable for 5 hours-priceless! Sometimes it’s the little things that allow you to breathe and regroup. I am sensing your jealousy!
I am not suggesting you need an “Eat Pray Love” style trip where you disappear for yearlong pasta and pad Thai feast. I am suggesting you carve out time each day, once a week or at the very least once a month where YOU become your priority.
Five Ways to Create “Me Time”
- 15 minutes of mindful meditation
- Beautifying with a mani, pedi or a blowout
- Going to the movies solo (gotta love the unreachable factor)
- Exploring the unexpected; a painting, wine tasting or cooking class
- An overnight or two or three (nights) with the girls. No kid talk allowed
Family is everything to me and while I miss them as I drive past the palm trees and celeb spots, I realize that this trip is not just for ME, but for them too. In order to be a better mom and wife to my hubs and kids, I need to replenish my tank. So go ahead and replenish yours and marvel at yourself already...
