In My Opinion
9-Year-Old Girl Puts McDonald’s in The Hot Seat for Serving Junk Food
Do you think McDonald’s sells junk food? That is exactly what 9-year-old Hannah Robertson thought as she raised her hand at the annual shareholder’s meeting. She point blank asked the CEO if he wanted kids to grow up to be healthy. Her line of questions blamed McDonald’s for tricking kids into eating food that isn’t good for them and making them sick. McDonald’s CEO responded by stating that McDonald’s doesn’t sell junk food.
I applaud Hannah for having the nerve to stand up to a grown up and ask tough questions. She has shown social responsibility that many adults can’t fully grasp.
But there is a huge flaw in her thinking: Just because McDonald’s sells junk food, or um, “fast food,” that doesn’t mean that kids have to eat it. I mean, do we always do exactly what companies want us to do – buy more, eat more, consume more, drive more, spend, spend, spend? Sure, they have some fancy advertising that is marketed to all age groups, including children, but that doesn’t mean that the public has to buy it. If you don’t think McDonald’s is healthy, DON’T EAT IT.
So, do I think McDonald’s is junk food? Yep, sure do and I haven’t eaten there in almost 4 years. My kids don’t even know what a “happy meal” is. That is a choice my husband and I made several years ago because we wanted to teach our kids about healthy food choices. But this isn’t just about having forbidden food, we talk to our kids about making the right decisions, following their instincts, and using critical thinking skills in all of life. And that is my job as a parent.
If we want kids to start making healthier decisions, we need to educate them, not expect companies to change to our expectations. Hannah is on the right track for wanting healthier choices in dining, but the truth is that McDonald’s has never been about being the healthiest option; it is about being the most convenient.
What do you think? Does McDonald’s sell junk food? Are they the reason kids there are so many unhealthy kids?
