Adoptive Mom's "Newborn" Photo Shoot With 13-Year-Old Son Goes Viral
It took 13 years, but Latrell Williams’ birth announcement has finally gone out!
"Here's my sweet not so little newborn! His name is Latrell and weighs 112 lbs.," the boy's mother Kelli Higgins declared on Facebook.
The cause for the delay? Higgins and her husband adopted Latrell (who was 10-years-old at the time) and his younger sister (who was five-years-old at the time) in 2011. They had five biological children at the time and a sixth on the way.
The family was sitting around the dinner table last month, when Higgins – a professional photographer – mentioned that she was preparing for an upcoming baby photo session. Latrell noted that he wished he had baby photos of himself, and things took off from there.
Higgins’ 12-year-old daughter suggested they “recreate” a newborn photo shoot just for her brother.
“I thought it was funny and that it would be a good idea,” Latrell said. His mom had mixed emotions about it but the shoot took place the very next day.
“I was very sad too because I didn’t have any photos of him either," Higgins said. "I think it’s really hard to have children and not know what they looked like when they were younger.”
The result was a touching and somewhat humorous collage of classic newborn photos – close-ups of feet, swaddling blankets and all!
Since being posted on Higgins' Facebook timeline, the photos have gone viral. They have received more than 11,500 likes and approximately 5,000 shares, plus the story has received tons of attention through the media.
“The one reaction that is really humbling and I’m really excited about is there have been a lot of parents that come to me telling me that they were thinking about adopting a baby, but after seeing those photos it’s changed their minds and they want to adopt an older child,” Higgins explains.
Who knows, maybe this will become a trend among parents who have adopted older kids – or maybe even encourage those who have thought about adopting.
