American Girl and Barbie Introduce Bald Dolls
There’s a trend among toymakers right now that is actually worth supporting – and it’s not related to a blockbuster animated film, a teen celebrity or an app for hand held devices. Manufacturers are creating dolls geared towards children who are suffering (or know someone suffering) from hair loss due to cancer or other illnesses such as alopecia and trichotillomania.
Mattel is launching “Bald Barbie” later this year, and now American Girl just announced that they have developed their “Doll Without Hair” (available in five skin tones which just makes it even MORE awesome).
“For more than a year, American Girl has been hard at work developing a doll without hair option for girls affected by cancer, alopecia, or any medical condition causing hair loss. Debuting today as part of the My American Girl line, the new dolls provide even more possibilities for a girl to create a friend that’s as unique as she is.” Amen to that! Enough with the blonde locks, big boobs and hooker style outfits!
My daughter just turned three so I haven’t bought any American Girl dolls yet (plus, much to my delight she’s obsessed with Spiderman) BUT say I HAD bought her one already…the company will switch any heads with hair for a hairless option.
American Girl announced they have plans to donate many of their “Dolls Without Hair" to the Children's Hospital Association while Mattel has plans to donate some “Bald Barbies” to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation.
Would you buy one of these dolls for your kids?
