Disney Girls Shed Good Girl Image (and Clothing) for New Movie
Have you seen the trailer for Spring Breakers? They must have saved a ton on wardrobe by having actresses like Vanessa Hudgens and Selena Gomez in bikinis most of the time. I'm sure beach cover-ups would have put the movie way over budget.
No, this is definitely not the Vanessa from the High School Musical movies or the Selena from the Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place. Now it's all sex, drugs and rock and roll violence. Plus, Vanessa Hudgens plays a stripper in The Frozen Ground which comes out later this year. I bet all those High School Musical fans will love watching her work the pole!
These are not the first actresses to go from goody girls to bad gals. It seems like a rite of passage for many young actresses who are afraid of being typecast as the girl next door.
Remember Elizabeth Berkeley from Saved by the Bell? She played a stripper in the 1995 movie Showgirls. Or Katie Holmes who went from playing the ever innocent Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek to going topless in the The Gift. And probably one of the most famous actresses to break out of her good girl image is Lindsay Lohan. She went from playing adorable, mischievous twins in the family friendly film The Parent Trap to an all too real life of rehab, DUI arrests, probation violations and bad press. She should have stuck with the cute movies.
For the actresses of Spring Breakers (which also includes ABC Family's Ashley Benson and actress Rachel Korine), it's likely a fun departure to trade in squeaky images for a film about drugs, guns and crime. But what about their fan base? What about all the tweens and teens who have grown up loving and idolizing Hudgens and Gomez? Sorry tweens and teens, you can't go see their new movie. Because it's less singing, more topless girls, cocaine snorting and crime sprees. How do you explain that to your kid?!
I certainly understand the need for a young star to expand her acting range and showcase her talents, but does that always mean she has to become a sex object? Because taking off most of your clothes doesn't mean you’re a better actress. It just means everyone knows what you look like nearly naked.
I feel like these actresses need to pay respect to how they became famous in the first place. No, they don't have to make Disney movies forever. But how about a film that is more worthy of their fans and their talent. Because Spring Breakers isn't it.
