Is George Lucas Too Old To Have a Baby?
69 year old Star Wars creator George Lucas just had a baby with his 44 year old wife Mellody Hobson via surrogate. The couple married in June. Yes, he's just shy of his 70th birthday and signing up for the newborn experience again. (He has three adult children.) That is super bold.
Now there are plenty of older men marrying younger women. In fact, every time I'm out with my dad, I'm reminded of this societal fact because everyone thinks my dad is my husband. Eww.
This has been happening to me my whole life. I distinctly remember getting my tonsils out as a teenager and the operating room staff requesting that my husband wait outside. I was 16. Yo people - that's my father!!
Frankly, I don't care if young women want to treat themselves to older men and the perks of wrinkly skin and early bird specials. But I pause when they decide to have a baby.
Is it fair that Everest Hobson Lucas (that's the new baby girl) will not get as many years with her dad? By the time she is just 11 years old, Lucas will be 80. And well, that's kind of ancient.
So yeah, baby Everest has an old dad. But on the upside...
1. Her dad is a billionaire which I think pretty much makes her a baby billionaire.
2. At her Star Wars themed birthday parties, she can have the real Chewbacca.
3. She gets to refer to her time-outs as visiting the dark side.
All pretty cool stuff.
68-year-old actor Michael Douglas is another mature dad. He had two children (now 13 and 10) with Catherine Zeta Jones, 25 years his junior.
But celebrity or not, people don't seem to blink when a sixty something guy has a baby. But when it's a much older woman, more questions are raised. Maybe that's because women are often still the main caretaker of kids.
Now none of us know how much time we really have on this planet so perhaps why not have kids when you want them.
But I do think we owe our children as much time as we can give them. You don't want to be on your way to assisted living as your kid is on their way to elementary school. And parenthood takes so much energy. I'm in my 40s and exhausted! How can anyone take this on in their golden years? Good luck to George Lucas. May the force be within him.
