In My Opinion
Let Them Eat Cake!
Are kids "fat" because they eat cupcakes? Are you "fat" because you eat cupcakes? I eat a piece of cake everyday or at the very least I am friendly with a bag of Hershey kisses and I am not "fat" or unhealthy. Is being "fat" even unhealthy?
I have the ability to make choices. We all have the ability to make choices for ourselves and our family.
We do not need the school board to ban a bake sale. It is a tradition. It is the way parents do their best to show support for the schools. It is an opportunity to fund programs that have fallen by the wayside when the budget ax falls.
The issue of childhood obesity isn't going to resolve itself by not offering homemade baked goods. The issue is children need to get moving and become active. The bake sale ban group should instead focus their efforts on creating running clubs and team sports for children to participate in for free.
Why not figure out a way to make sports accessible to every child, no matter if their parents can financially afford it or not. If the bake sale ban group and society were more focused on teaching people how to make better choices, then we would not have the obesity problem we have. If we focused on resolving why people over eat, then that would be beneficial. Taking away the cupcakes is only going to make people want them more.
Deciding to ban bake sales, which fund sports programs, is both counter productive and discouraging. You have a group of people who are trying to help and instead of offering a solution, a bigger problem is created.
