Male Pop Stars Selling Makeup to our Daughters?!
Just when you were running low on your Justin Bieber perfume, there are some new must have pop star products hitting the market. The British boy band One Direction is debuting a makeup collection including lip gloss, blush and nail polish.
There is something that feels icky about One Direction hocking beauty products. These are the boys who are famous for singing about natural beauty in "What Makes You Beautiful" but apparently what makes you beautiful is a bunch of cheap makeup. I can't wait for them to come out with their feminine hygiene line.
Colorado mom Daphne Biener isn't thrilled. "Tweens in makeup? Ew. It makes me sad to see younger and younger girls given the message that they are not OK the way they are."
Erin Butler, a Connecticut mom of two girls, thinks this new makeup line is just an easy way to take advantage of love struck teens. But at the same time, understands the marketing campaign.
"You know there is a part of me that remembers being a tween and if Ricky Schroder had some lip gloss line, I would have been all over it. So I get it."
I feel a little hypocritical criticizing 1D (that's One Direction for anyone not recently briefed on boy band monikers) because my 6 and 8 year old girls love to play with makeup and even have a Barbie makeup set. So what's the difference?
For me, the difference is it's one thing to play with makeup because you watch your mom put it on and another to have a group of famous boys sending the message you should be wearing makeup.
I wish they would just sell foot deodorizer to tween boys or something. But of course that probably wouldn't be a huge seller.
I did get a laugh over the names of the lip balms (supposedly inspired by the boys' favorite colors and flavors). The names are... "Harry loves Strawberry," "Zayn loves Watermelon," "Louis loves Vanilla," "Niall loves Cherry" and "Liam loves Blueberry." Obviously, we all know that Taylor Swift won't be using the strawberry.
But my 6-year-old daughter says, "It's kind of perfect because I love strawberries the best and Harry the best."
I wonder if they sell George Clooney lip gloss. Now that might be something I'd be interested in.
