Mom Admits To Changing Grades For Her Own Kids
What would you do to help your child succeed in school? There are a number of things I would do – spending more time going over the material, talking with teachers to get additional tips, paying for extra tutoring, etc – but there is one thing I wouldn’t do. Commit a felony.
But this Pennsylvania mom did just that.
In 2010, Catherine Venusto worked in the same school district that her children were attending and when her daughter was failing a class, she allegedly changed the “F” grade to a “M” for “medical”. Then in 2012, a year after leaving that school district to work in a different school district, she changed her son’s grade from a 98 to a 99. But these are not isolated incidents. Police found that Venusto used the Superintendent’s username and password over 100 times to access the district’s online grading system. They also believe that she accessed a total of nine other faculty members’ email accounts and personnel files in human resources without permission.
Venusto is facing up to 42 years in prison or a $90,000 fine for six charges of third degree felonies.
What exactly was this mom thinking? I understand that we all want the best for our children, but violating school policies and the privacy of her co-workers? Risking not only her job, but her freedom and savings, all done just to change a grade? What kind of example is she setting for her children? Was her daughter failing because she knew her mom would fix it or was her mom just trying to help her daughter from the embarrassment of getting an “F” grade? I guarantee the turmoil and embarrassment of having your mother in headlines and possibly jail is much worse. Not to mention the example she is giving them about trying to cheat your way to success. Well, then again, maybe this IS a good example – when you try to cheat and lie your way through life, eventually you’ll get caught and have to pay the consequences.
What do you think? Is this mother completely out of line or was she just trying her best to help her kids?
