Mom Breastfeeds Wrong Newborn After Hospital Mix-Up
A massive mix-up at a Minneapolis hospital resulted in one mother breastfeeding the wrong newborn baby. The mistake occurred because the babies were placed in the wrong bassinettes in the hospital's nursery at some point during the night.
Although the hospital assigns matching wristbands to moms and their infants to try and AVOID mix ups like this, the hospital staff obviously had not brought their “A game” to the nursery that night and subsequently didn’t notice the mistake. It took one of the moms who had just welcomed twins to realize that she was holding the wrong baby…AFTER she had already nursed him. The baby belonged to new mom Tammy Van Dyke.
Tammy’s sister Stacy Engebretson said that Tammy was bottle feeding her child, and knowing that he was breastfed by the other woman has caused emotional distress.
And to make matters even WORSE (because things weren’t bad enough before), now the little guy will have to undergo blood tests for HIV and hepatitis every three months for the next year.
The hospital gave Van Dyke a letter expressing its sincerest apologies, and said it would pay for the baby's tests. So nice of them……
"I will be thankful to God when this year's over and he's cleared all his health tests and we don't have to think about this again," Van Dyke said.
