Mom Leaves 5-Year-Old Alone to Babysit Younger Siblings
Moms often find themselves in jams where they need to run out but can’t find a sitter. So they do one of two things; they either DON’T go…or they bring the kids along. But leaving preschoolers alone in the house? Not really an option.
A Florida mom is facing child neglect charges for leaving her three little kids home alone while she shopped because she figured the oldest, who is 5, was big enough to babysit.
Osceola Sheriff’s deputies who showed up at Yvonne Rodriguez’s door in Kissimmee on Saturday said they were greeted by a little boy who said, “Policemen, mommy is not here. I’m watching my sisters. Can you watch us now?” the South Florida Sun Sentinel reported.
The 23-year-old came home about two hours later and told police she’d been out shopping and getting her nails done.
Rodriguez first lied and said she'd asked a friend to care for the children, but then finally confessed that she had left the 5-year-old boy in charge because she thought he was "mature enough" to watch his younger sisters.
Based on her statements and the information provided by the five year old child, Rodriquez was arrested and charged with three counts of child neglect and then released from jail on bond.
Neighbors said they didn’t know whether Rodriguez left the children alone before.
“Anything could happen…a fire, they could choke on something. It's really irresponsible," Berto Diaz told WFTV.
The Department of Children and Families contacted the childrens' grandparents and transferred custody to them.
Do you think even a “mature” five-year-old should be left alone to babysit? What is the youngest sitter you've used?
