Monica Lewinsky Pens Tell-All Book - YOU GO, GIRL!
I don't know about you but I did a quick OMG when I heard the news that Monica Lewinsky- the infamous White House intern who turned President Clinton's tenure into an ongoing parody of a White House where oral sex ruled the roost- was planing a TELL ALL book about her sexcapades with the former president.
Looking back on that period of time, and all the drama that surrounded; Ms. Lewinsky, her blue dress, the infamous cigars and hearing, "I have not had sexual relations with that woman" on continuous loop which had our country whipped up into a frenzy all I can think is this-- I am the same age as Monica Lewinsky.
I also remember that during that time period and, at that age, I too recall being in compromising situations at a workplace, where I could have made similar mistakes. As I watched this Lewinsky scandal unravel-my heart hurt for her- for this poor girl who made a bad, immature judgement call. She got swept up in the heady power of being with one of the most intoxicating figures in our country at the time. She made a mistakes-- okay a series of them-- but she was vulnerable, impressionable and clearly she was in search of an older man's approval.
It still feels unfair that she seemed to get the brunt of so much of the criticism, when clearly the intimate relationship (or transaction) that transpired took place between two people- and yet she became the fall guy. She was an easy target-and she also wasn't the revered and honored President. It was easy to despise her, poke fun at her and rip her to shreds.
Unfortunately the jokes and innuendo made at her expense have colored every aspect of her life. While President Clinton has gone on to form noble foundations and trail blaze in his esteemed career- Lewinsky, barely out of college at the time was on the cusp of creating a persona that never seemed to materialize. Sure, she did some interviews, began a handbag line-- but the cloud that hung over her reputation never seemed to dissipate. It's almost as if she was and continues to be frozen in time as that girl in the blue dress and beret, earnestly beaming as she's snapped in a photo op at a press event for the then President Clinton.
Well Ms. Lewinsky is finally going to have her say-- and this time as a 39 year old woman, with years of hard earned reflection over those exploits in a new tell-all book she's reportedly being paid $12 million to pen. And you know what I say. YOU GO GIRL. I want to hug her and tell her how sorry I am for all the jokes made at her expense and for the years she probably struggled and never quite was able to live without that scandal dominating her every decision and life event. I want to tell her, this is her moment-- no one can tell her what or how to do it. She's remained discreet all these years and doing so, has not yielded her anything but more disdain and the privilege of being the butt of yet another oral sex joke. So my advice Monica Lewinsky: Now is your time to shine sister- spill your heart and soul- and tell whatever you need to- to finally close the chapter on this and make a clean break from the mistakes so many of us make in our early twenties-and get to leave behind- whereas yours overshadowed any pursuits you attempted and much of your adult life.
Are you ready to read this book? What is your opinion of Monica Lewinsky?
