Will Pregnant Boy Pictures Really Stop Teen Pregnancies?
Have you seen the new safe sex campaign in Chicago? It features shirtless pregnant boys. Yes, I did say BOYS and I’ll admit it is a bit shocking. The campaign is aimed at teens and hopes to get people talking about the very real problem of teen pregnancy and how it can affect more than just teen girls. These ads will be on many public platforms, like transit buses, trains, and bus shelters. But will it really help?
Although I image the ads will get a few heads turning, and plenty of chuckles, I’m not so sure it will end, or even lower the rate of teen pregnancies in Chicago. For one thing, teens know that boys don’t have to deal with pregnancy the same way girls do. Girls deal with physical, emotional, and mental changes with pregnancy. Boys on the other hand have a choice to just walk away. Even if they want to be involved, they are really just on the hook for financial support, not all the physical and emotional changes that will forever alter the girl’s life.
Sure, girls have a choice, too – but even abortion comes with emotional baggage that a boy just can’t understand.
To me, these ads are just a joke – and that, I find offense to all the teen girls out there that are dealing with real pregnancies. Their decisions aren’t a joke and neither are their pregnancies. They have real responsibilities and decisions to make, whether they want to or not because of the baby growing inside of them. Let’s not take away attention from the fact that truly matters.
Yea – the ad got us talking, but are we talking about what is most important? What do you think – will these ads be effective or just a joke about a serious issue?
