Child Safety
Q & A With John Walsh: Predators and Your Kids
John Walsh has brought the 25th season of America's Most Wanted to Lifetime! You asked, and he answered. Below are tips and thoughts from the host himself. Don't miss the show, Fridays at 9pm/8c
Q: What can parents do to insure that "trusted" figures in their kids' lives (for example: teachers, coaches, clergy), are not taking advantage of them or actually abusing them?
A: The most important thing parents can do to ensure the protection of their children from “trusted” figures in their lives is to communicate with their kids by listening to everything they say and asking questions. Never assume everything is fine in your child’s life. If your child becomes scared to go to school, soccer practice, or church activities; figure out why. Parents can usually sense when something is not right.
We also asked Mr. Walsh about the effects of domestic violence on kids. He's not a medical professional, but he directed us to the AMW safety website for some insight.
Q: When children are witnesses of domestic violence (most likely against their mother), what is the harm it can cause in the long run? Can they end up with issues as adults?
A: You can find some great information on domestic violence here: http://safety.amw.com/family/taking-a-stand-against-domestic-violence/
