Project Runway

A Cowgirl Chic Challenge and an Edgy Country Look for Moms

You probably don’t know this, but in another life I was a hard core country music fan. For most of my twenties, I went to at least two country concerts a year and most of the stations in my car were set to, you guessed it, country music stations.

I still love the genre, but since becoming a mama, I’m listening to more Radio Disney than country these days. That doesn’t mean I don’t crank it up every once a while when I have a rare moment in the car alone however.

So, obviously I LOVED the latest “Project Runway” challenge. The designers were split into pairs and asked to design red carpet and performance looks for country darling Miranda Lambert. Clearly, not all the designers share my passion for country music.

Matt, in particular, wasn’t exactly turned on by the task at hand and it showed. So I don’t think it was much of a surprise to anyone when he was eliminated. It wasn’t even a surprise to him. When I spoke with him and asked whether he thought it would be him or Michelle that would be sent home, he said, “When they announced who was in the bottom, I knew Daniel had a couple wins under his belt, so I thought he would just get his hands slapped. I knew Sam had immunity from the week before and I knew that Michelle has such strong conviction for her designs. I knew I was going home. I would have been surprised if I had stayed.”

When you can’t tap into anything that provides you with motivation, it’s more than a little difficult to complete an every day kind of task, much less design an entire look under insane time constraints. And for whatever reason, Matt just couldn’t find passion in this challenge. He had this to say about his lackluster performance…” For me, I kind of respond to emotion in my work. I design not for the idea of a product but for the idea of healing or therapy. If I'm not inspired by something or an idea, it's hard for me to put something together.”

It’s a shame that Matt was his own worst enemy with this challenge, but he promised me that we haven’t seen the last of him!

Someone who was able to hone in on some passion and create something beautiful with this challenge was Amanda. Despite struggling a bit as of late, she pulled it together and designed a killer navy fringed frock that this girl would die to get her hands on! She didn’t win, but frankly, I think she should have!

So, this edgy country look is dedicated to Amanda…Thanks for inspiring me!
