Breaches of Insecurity…(My "Dance Moms: Miami" Episode 3 Recap)
Jessi is the kindest child I have ever seen. She always takes time to help younger dancers stretch and she mentors them. In our studio the younger children love and respect Jessi. While the incident was a misfortune and completely out of character for Jessi, I think the punishment has now gone beyond the action. I believe Jessi has learned her lesson and she should not have to be punished two weeks in a row. It is totally unfair that some dancers have been given an opportunity to do three solos back to back and Jessi has been benched.
It was really sad for me to hear that Jessi's insecurity was being ugly on the inside. What America doesn't is that Jessi used to be overweight and she was the ugly duckling of our studio. She had to endure people ridiculing her, making fun of her, telling her go play soccer and saying you are not a dancer, you are fat. She always used to get in the car at the end of practice with tears in her eyes and used to tell me, Mami people are mean to me. Hannah hasn't touched the surface of what Jessi has gone through. She felt ugly on the inside because people have always put her down. At first because she was the little fat girl that couldn't dance and now it is because of envy. It’s so easy to say things and hurt others to make yourself feel good, but people never realize that those words can leave emotional scars. It is an insecurity she has had for a while, it saddens me and we are working together so she can get over that insecurity.
We had fun watching the kids do impressions of us - Jessi had me spot on. Lucas and Sammy were definitely spot on too! But then tension rose during practice. To me it was unfair that Sammy did three solos in a row - the coaches always tell Jessi, you have a solo and you better win. The fact is Sammy did not place with her first solo and she didn't win. Yet she was given another solo the week after that. I believe solos should be given upon merit and in my opinion she had not earned it.
I think Abby thought when she came to our studio that Sammy was going be the super star. Maybe she was used to that at her studio, but at Stars Dance Studio, there are plenty of dancers that are amazingly talented, Jessi included. I think Abby realized that Jessi is an amazing dancer and because of that she might feel threatened. In addition, Jessi was scolded for two weeks straight, but Sammy was extremely cocky when Mayra made a comment about Jessi being her favorite. My daughter was standing there and just ignored Sammy’s comment. Cockiness is ugly coming out of a little girl like Sammy - I felt that should have been addressed but it wasn’t. We are sending a message to the kids that it’s OK to be cocky. After her bad behavior last week, Sammy gets a solo this week? What’s fair about that?
I went out to drinks because I wanted to give Abby a second chance, I have been somewhat swayed by what was told to me by Debi and I wanted to make my own conclusions rather than rely on what another mom said. Both Debi and Brigette can be manipulative at times.
In regards to the group dance, I find it courageous that children this young are willing to face their insecurities and allow them to publically be shown. I don't think that I could have done that. It took courage to talk about their insecurities. I thought the dance was beautiful; it was raw, organic, real, and well danced. They deserved to get higher than fifth place. Jessi has worked really hard on stage and off stage. She is a beautiful child inside and out and I hope America can gets a chance to see her beautiful dancing with a solo next week!
