"Break a Leg" (My Episode 21 Recap)
Every week at the ALDC is an adventure. It is an emotional roller coaster with a lot of highs and lows. You better buckle up because you can be assured that you are in for a bumpy ride with quick turns and dips. The start of the week was a high point since Nia was high on the pyramid. I was happy that Abby recognized Nia’s strong solo performance last week and rewarded Nia with a favorable place on the pyramid. Not everything at pyramid was so sweet. The news that Paige had broken her toe was devastating. Paige is a critical member of the team and not having Paige perform with the team is a disappointment.
Yet, Paige’s injury was not the only thing that plagued the team this week. Brooke’s ongoing back pain was a concern and we worried about her performance. Seeing Brooke in constant pain was difficult. She wanted to compete and push through the pain. However at some point as a mom you have to make the executive decision that enough is enough. Seeing Brooke in tears was Kelly’s breaking point. Brooke doesn’t normally cry when dancing so it was wise of Kelly to pull Brooke’s number. A mom knows her child best. As a mother you know your child’s limits. Kelly definitely made the right decision.
Abby’s reluctance to seriously consider Nia as Chloe’s duet partner was frustrating and disappointing. Abby had a specific duet routine selected for Paige and Chloe. Since Paige was unable to do that particular duet Abby was choreographing a different duet. Nia was available to do a duet. I did not understand why Abby chose to look outside of the team for a duet partner. Abby has the expertise and creativity to choreograph a first place duet number featuring Nia and Chloe.
The half hearted “try out” that Abby extended to Nia was matched only by Abby’s equally insincere excuse that Nia wasn’t the right fit for the duet with Chloe. It was disappointing that Nia wasn’t selected but such judgment calls are Abby’s to make. Nia will have to wait for another opportunity. After all, Paige and Chloe are still waiting for their duet! Let’s hope Paige’s toe heals quickly!!
Jill’s sense of entitlement and her overly competitive nature can be exasperating. Jill’s sole focus is what is best for Kendall. Jill expects team privileges although Jill herself declared that she and Kendall are not part of the team. Jill will seize any opportunity. Jill is always on the lookout for advancing Kendall’s individual interest and makes no apologies for this aggressive approach.
The first place win for the group dance was a surprise. At the beginning, I was not a fan of the group dance. Abby’s choreography of ballet inspired jazz moves coupled with her French inspired school girl vision was odd. I was not sure the audience was going to get it. I am not sure I really got it. Because the dance required so much dance technique I thought it would be a hard dance to pull off a win. I thought the girls needed more time to rehearse the choreography to ensure that their movements were crisp and precise.
The dance was short yet high energy and demanding. The girls could not be sloppy and could not afford to get tired or winded. Although I did not initially like the dance concept, the girls performed a lively and entertaining number. In many ways the dance was refreshing because it was unlike anything else presented at the competition. It is not every day that you see a small group dance featuring ballet inspired jazz. The bottom line is that the dance was very cute and well executed by the girls!
Abby is very open about her favoritism towards Maddie. There is nothing new about that. Is it right, no. Is it hurtful, yes. We all understand that Abby’s favoritism is not a reflection on Maddie. Maddie may benefit from it, but it is not her fault. The mothers nor the children on the team resent Maddie. Maddie is a child and she cannot control the actions of her coach. Members of the team may not like or agree with Abby’s behavior but we never take out our frustrations with Abby on Maddie. We frequently tell Maddie and Melissa how talented Maddie is and congratulate Maddie on her achievements. We are happy for all of our teammates when there is a success. My issues are with Abby.
