Cathy's Take on the Roanoke Competition (Season 4, Episode 4 Recap)
You switched the makeup of Candy Apples to all boys and one girl. Why?
An all-boys team is more of a threat in a competition and it’s more of an attention grabber. I knew I wanted Gavin and Mackenzie Morales as a package for the Candy Apples and it worked out perfectly that she was the one girl on the team. They originally were a YouTube phenomenon and my mom saw them and told me she thought we should talk to them. My mom is the hippest 79-year-old around!
How are things working out with Blake McGrath?
Blake and I have a great relationship. I’ve watched him grow up for a young boy into the talented young man he has become. He’s a huge asset to the team. He’s phenomenal.
Were you disappointed that the moms revealed the new team over social media?
Yes- they basically handed over our playbook to Abby. Every time one of these ladies takes a selfie, shows the dancers in certain poses and post a team photo, they are giving away our secrets and it’s disheartening to me that they won’t stop. I think the element of surprise can be a great advantage and they are taking that way from the Candy Apples.
Tell us a little bit about what happened during the Roanoke competition. The jazz dance the Candy Apples was pretty strong…and yet they came in second place again while ALDC took home first place.
It’s funny – Abby always becomes a nervous wreck when she finds out that we are attending a competition. Her track record is much better than ours and yet, she is still completely threatened by the Candy Apples. Now, keep in mind that we consistently come in second place (with the exception of a few wins) and there are plenty of other teams that we beat out for second place so it’s not a bad place to be.
You complained about the politics of the dance world. Can you explain?
I think part of the problem is that the judges are starstruck by Abby. Plus, ALDC has a reputation for being good so they all just assume she’s going to win – I call it the Bandwagon Theory. They all jump on and give the team a good score because it’s expected.
Also, Abby always makes the same one dancer in front – it’s her ace in the hole. If I were a judge, I’d be watching all the girls in the back to see how good the rest of the team was.
