Project Runway

DIY Textiles And a Red HOT Look for Moms

This week’s episode of "Project Runway" brought the designers some much needed emotional relief. Their loved ones paid them a visit and each one came prepared with a little piece of history. The designers were asked to look back at their heritage and design a print based on it.

Happily, everyone seemed energized from spending some quality time with their peeps and they all tackled the challenge with vigor. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, some of the prints failed to please the judges.

In one of the funnier moments of this season, Tim called Ven’s design an “homage to a menstrual cycle.” So, that mental picture is pretty much going to be in my head for a while. Just sayin’.

Ven once again went for a floral motif which the judges were none too happy about. He took Tim’s advice and removed the maxi pad looking details from his dress, but that wasn’t enough to save the look. I, for one, wasn’t surprised that he ended up on the bottom at judging, but I was surprised by who went home.

Gunnar started the episode strong with a very touching story about being bullied at school as a child and while the love and thought that went into his print were beautiful, the look that he created with it wasn’t what the judges were looking for. The boxy cut of his jacket and the business of his print seemed to be his undoing.

While I agree with the judges take on his look, I don’t know if it was the worst. When I chatted with Gunnar, I asked if he thought Venn should have been sent home over him and he replied, “I definitely think his look was worse.” It’s hard to disagree. Busy birds or a print that Tim associated with a lady’s time of the month…which one would you rather wear? Haha!

Although, Gunnar feels strongly about his design, he wasn’t devastated when he heard the news that he was headed home. “I was very much over it. I think at that point, the competition was just wearing me down. The only point I needed to prove was to myself.” In the end, he did prove to himself that he could come back and put out work that he was proud of.

I have to say I’ll miss him. After the first episode, I was afraid that Gunnar was simply a drama queen, especially after the whole Christopher feud. After seeing the sweet moment that the two of them shared before he left, however, it was obvious that the drama that played out on television wasn’t going home with him and he said as much to me when I talked to him about Christopher. “There are absolutely no hard feelings toward any of it,” he said. And from what I gleaned from the episode, Christopher feels the same way. I think that one of them needs to stop playing hard to get and ask the other one out. Adorable couple alert!

On to this week’s episode inspired look. I just loved the vibrant red print that Melissa created and Dmitry’s cutout jacket was flat out amazing, so I styled a look based on those pieces. This is the kind of outfit that’s sure to pique your significant other’s interest!
