Melissa from “Dance Moms” Shares Her Take on the Season 3 Finale!
After one of the most tumultuous competition seasons ever, the Abby Lee Dance Company hit New Orleans last night hoping to retain their championship title at Nationals. While Abby focused on which dancers would compete, the tension between the moms spilled over into the street...literally. Tempers flared before the dancers even hit the stage.
We caught up with Melissa to find out what her thoughts and reactions were to the dramatic season finale of "Dance Moms".
Q: What was your initial reaction when Abby assigned the girls to learn solos in groups of two (Brooke vs. Payton, Chloe vs. Kendall, Asia vs. Mackenzie, Nia vs. Paige vs. Maddie)?
A: I thought it was great. It gave the girls the opportunity to learn new dances and new choreography. I wasn’t worried that the other moms would get mad because I’m used to the antics at this point. Plus, my daughters are committed dancers and they never miss a rehearsal, so I figured whatever the outcome was, it would be fair and square.
Q: Maddie froze when Abby wanted to her and Asia to have an improv “dance-off” during their rehearsal time. Did this upset you?
A: I was upset because Maddie does improv at home all the time and I know she’s capable of it, not because Asia “rocked it” and Maddie didn’t. We don’t “rock it” at ALDC; we dance. That’s just not our style. They are very different, Asia and Maddie. I like that Maddie is cute and I know that technically, she’s a better dancer than Asia.
Q: Christi and Leslie got into a fight in the French Quarter – tell us a little bit about what happened and what your reaction was.
A: My first instinct is always to help – it’s in my nature. I wanted to break the fight up so I could protect Christi, because Leslie is Leslie and she was really going at it. Christi isn’t really a fighter like that, so I was worried. But she was caught up in the moment and I couldn’t intervene, so I then ran to go find Kelly. Things happened quickly, and the fight ended soon after it started.
Q: Were you relieved when Kristie Ray announced that she and Asia were leaving the world of competitive dancing?
A: Yes, I was relieved. Kristie Ray was not a member of our studio – she didn’t fit in, and she made it clear that she didn’t want to be a part of our group. The team didn’t mean anything to her. It’s different with Leslie, though – she’s a team player, and in the long run, she’d do anything for us.
Q: Was it very stressful when Abby told Leslie and Christi to leave after the fight? Were you worried about how it would affect the results of the competition?
A: I wasn’t that worried, because the girls are amazing – very resilient. And every competition is important, so the fact that it was the Nationals didn’t really make things any more stressful. I was, however, sad for Chloe and Payton. They were visibly upset and disappointed that they couldn’t compete.
