Wearable Art and Spring Style for Moms
A trip to the Guggenheim is bound to bring forth something beautiful right? Not so fast... In the latest “Project Runway” episode, the designers were asked to find inspiration in the modern art at the Guggeheim Museum and create a work of wearable art along with a ready-to-wear look to complement it. I always love it when the designers create their own textiles and the designers really came up with some cool prints this go around. The team format brought out a whole different dynamic with this particular textile challenge however.
Michelle and Stanley, were born to work together, while others, like Layana and Daniel and Richard and Patricia weren’t nearly as in sync...if at all.
The judges did Michelle and Stanley a giant favor when they partnered them up. Their aesthetics melded beautifully! Michelle’s edginess and Stanley’s elegance combined to create two near perfect looks. If Stanley’s sweet little ready to-wear frock was available for purchase, I’d hunt it down Predator style!
On the other end of the spectrum were Richard and Patricia. Richard seemed lost from the get go and he and Patricia just couldn’t seem to get on the same page. When I asked for Richard’s take on why he went home and whether being paired with a different partner would have made a difference he said, “I made a wrong decision on a textile. It wasn’t the time to take a risk.” I think the wearable art challenge is the perfect time to step outside your comfort zone and take a risk, but what do I know? I also asked Richard which of his fellow designers he would like to work with outside of “Project Runway” with and he said, “it would probably be Daniel or Joe.” Speaking of Daniel…
As insistent as Layana was about her vision for the art piece, I didn’t expect her to struggle with it as much as she did. Nina’s everything but the kitchen sink description of the gown Layana designed was spot on. I just didn’t see HER in her garment. I think we saw everything, but her. Although, I understand where the judges’ are coming from when they worry about Daniel’s ability to create young, fresh garments, I also think there is a side to him that’s quite capable of innovation. He proved that with the gorgeous blazer and skirt that he sent down the runway. Every girl dreams about owning a blazer as perfect as the one he created! And on a side note…This girl loves a good colorblock dress…So, if that line that Richard told me he’s working on features one of his beloved jersey colorblock dresses, he can sign me up for one. Just sayin’.
This time, I decided to style a look around a lightweight blazer as it’s one of my favorite spring wardrobe must haves!
