5 Romantic Getaways for Fall
While my kids are super busy this fall playing soccer, baseball and softball games, it's pretty challenging for my hubby and I to truly find time for one another. The good news is that once we hit the third week of October, the temperature drops precipitously, the ball season goes on hiatus and that can only mean one thing...my birthday is right around the corner!
There's just so much to love about October, and getting the chance to celebrate with my husband every year is one of the things I cherish most. Every season, without fail, he always surprises me with a romantic dinner and sometimes even an impromptu getaway. There's nothing better than hopping in our car for an overnight October adventure. Some of my favorite fall haunts include:
Check into a B&B - As soon as the leaves begin to change, there's nothing better than an overnight trip to Lambertville, New Jersey. A few years ago, our friends introduced us to the Lambertville House , a charming 19th century colonial inn with stately rooms that come appointed with a king sized poster bed, jacuzzi tub and bottle of wine. Once you step outside the hotel, the town offers an array of shops and delectable local eateries and is in walking distance to an antiquing mecca...New Hope, Pennsylvania. Oh and did I mention that Lambertville is also near the Flemington Outlet Center? Eat, Laugh, Shop - a perfect combination.
Wine Tasting Anyone? While families are hitting apple orchards up and down the eastern seabord, make a pie for your kids and then leave them with a sitter while you head to the wineries with your spouse. There are more than a dozen vineyards in the Hamptons and even more in Upstate New York. Of course if you live on the west coast - from Sonoma to Seattle, you can find some of the best wineries in our country. One of my personal New York favorites? Applewood Winery, located near the quaint shopping village of Warwick, NY.
The White Elephant, Nantucket, MA - I will always hold a special place in my heart for Nantucket - my husband and I spent our first anniversay there where we rented bikes, explored the island on a moped and dined at the most romantic restaurant ever (Le Chanticleer). The White Elephant is one of the most beautful hotels there and it's conveniently located, just walking distance to the ferry. While most people hit Nantucket in the summer, I say avoid the crowds and enjoy the fall in all its glory.
London or Paris Calling - While I've technically never been to Paris and I've only been to London during holiday time, I've been surfing the web for some last minute deals - especially since I would love to take my mom on a surprise trip in time for her 70th birthday next month. From Travel Zoo to SniqueAway, there's always a great online travel deal that's yours for the taking.
Your Own Backyard - Lucky for us, we live in suburbia, so that means that fall foliage is all around us. If we can't zip out for a weekend, we can certainly go for a couple's bike ride, play a game of competitive tennis, race home to shower and change and then head to one of our favorite restaurants that overlooks the Hudson River. If my husband has truly planned our weekend outing, the package sometimes includes tickets to a Broadway show. Either way, getting the chance to re-connect with my husband away from the ball field has really played an important role in keeping our relationship alive and kicking.
So there you have it. While fall is all about family time, apple picking, baseball games and baking, in my neck of the woods it's also about romance, great wine, long walks and laughs with the one I love.
