Woman Fakes Terminal Cancer for Dream Wedding and Honeymoon
A twenty-five-year-old woman is facing six counts of felony charges after she allegedly told people, including her fiancé, that she had terminal cancer in order to get free wedding gifts and a honeymoon. Jessica Vega duped everyone into believing her story by giving a heart-felt testimony, and even shaving her head. This new mom received everything from a new wedding dress and alterations, to shoes, wedding photos, over $2000 worth of flowers, and even a trip to Aruba.
Keri Ciastko, a New York bridal shop owner, who provided the wedding dress to Vega, also gave her own money away to Vega because she was so moved by the story. She told ABCNews.com, “She pulled at my heartstrings. I've lost a lot of family members to cancer, so I did everything I could to help her.” She willingly gave out of the goodness of her heart, and unfortunately was conned in such a sick lie.
Vega must have been a good liar because she even had her fiancé convinced. Having forged a letter from a doctor, which “proved” her illness, it wasn’t until four months after the wedding, that her husband figured out the farce and reported her. He divorced her, but later reunited and had a second child with her.
Although Vega faces up to four years in prison for each felony, Ciastko isn’t seeking legal action against her for the money or services. When asked, she stated that although this is a sad situation, she would not hesitate to help someone again in the future. I applaud Ciastko for her forgiveness, yet I don’t think jail time is enough for someone like Vega. She should be held accountable for everything she took, spend her time in jail, but also spend years in community service helping those dying of cancer. Let her see the true faces of those that have terminal cancer and make her give, instead of take. Maybe, just maybe, that will give her a bit more perspective in how low she sunk.
