Stilettos in the Stirrups and other OB/GYN Adventures
I have one rule when I go to the OB/GYN: you can ask me to remove all my clothes, but my heels always stay on. No discussion. And I'm almost always in 3 to 5-inch heels.
Through my two pregnancies, annual pap smears, ovarian cysts and other gynecological adventures, I am always in the stirrups in heels.
I don't call myself stiletto mama for nothing, folks.
More importantly, for me, a good pair of heels are my source of power, confidence and I'm a "bad-ass bitch-ness." When I walk in my heels there's a theme song playing in my head, like Chaka Khan's "I'm Every Woman" or Beyonce's "Give Me Body," that makes me feel sexy and unstoppable.
Which is exactly what you need when they want you to strip, wear a tissue paper robe, and then spread your legs wide open, while you lay on your back and stare at the ceiling tiles. Could you possibly be anymore vulnerable??? More not in control??
No, thank you, Mr. OB/GYN. You don't get to look at vaginas all day AND leave me defenseless and exposed. I hang on to a small piece of dignity by keeping my power heels on.
How bad is my shoe thing?
Once, I injured my ankle running to answer my cell phone (don't ask). I ended up in a soft cast and boot--a death blow to my stiletto wearing swagger. I had a super important business meeting and lucrative deal to close but without my power heels, I felt limited. Mojo-less.
Sure I could have realized that my swagger comes from within and not from a pair of size 7 Manolos. I could have said "I am not my footwear" 100 times in a self-affirming way.
But instead I made a dash for the bathroom, cut off my soft cast, popped 4 Advil and shoved my feet into my power heels to do my pitch presentation.
Hey, I'm a mother. I survived 14 hours of labor. I can push past a few minutes of foot pain, easy peasy.
Yes, 30 minutes later I was right back in the bathroom crying like a baby in pain. But I closed the deal.
Get the point?
What's your power accessory? And am I the only one wearing stilettos in the OB/GYN stirrups?
