The 411: "Kirstie Alley's Big Life" on A&E
I have always loved Kirstie Alley. From "Cheers" to those "Look Whose Talking" movies, to "Veronica's Closet," to her Jenny Craig commercials, no matter where she turns up, Kirstie Alley has a knack for making me laugh out loud. So when I got the chance to see a sneak preview of her new reality series, "Kirstie Alley's Big Life" premiering this Sunday, March 21 at 10pm ET/PT on A&E, not only did I laugh until my sides hurt, I have been telling all my girlfriends they have to watch this show!
Let me tell why. First, Kirstie spends her days and nights with a cast of eclectic characters that include a personal assistant and flamboyant assistant apprentice, a lazy handyman, her two teen kids and a gaggle of lemurs. Despite a backyard that seems reminiscent of Disney's Animal Kingdom, there's something about Kirstie's life that actually seems semi-normal. As a single mom, Kirstie is genuinely concerned about her kids, True and Lillie and surprisingly, she seems so real - so darn funny, but incredibly real. In fact, when her kids ask if she'd like to join them at a teen party, she quips "Sure that's exactly who your friends want to see...your mom." While most teens are embarrassed by their mother, True and Lillie seem like they not only adore Kirstie, but they treat her as if she's their best friend.

We also see Kirstie's horrified reaction to a tabloid magazine which features an incredibly unflattering photo of her in her backyard. Mortified by an image of her wearing a massive green dress, Kirstie decides it's time to lose weight once and for all. But this time, she's doing it on her own terms and is not going to do it alone. Kirstie enlists her chubby handyman to join her on her weight loss journey, as her kids and staff cheer them on.
During the first two shows I got the chance to watch, I was doubled over in laughter - especially when Kirstie gets on the scale for the first time and when she interviews prospective trainers. But the best thing about this show is that it's entertaining without being shocking or plain stupid. While her life is certainly bigger than most, Kirstie Alley is a mom who is funny, smart and vulnerable and for all those reasons I'll be front and center every Sunday night watching her show!
