It's no secret that there are plenty of moms out there who believe their child can be a star. We see them doing whatever it takes to help their kids become the next Britney Spears. Or for those of us who remember Shirley Temple, an accomplished child actress who could sing & dance. But not everyone has the talent or will make the cut.
Lifetime's new reality series, Dance Moms, takes us behind the scenes of a dance studio run by a very serious—some might even call her "ruthless" —dance teacher who only has one goal in mind: WIN.
Watching this show brings me back to when I competed in gymnastics at a young age. I had to leave school early for practice just about every day. The time commitment, as well as the financial commitment, from my parents was big, exactly what you see with these real-life "dance moms". Maybe after awhile it starts to get to you.
In the first episode, we see an example of a mother who genuinely loses it after Abby, the owner of the studio, kicks her daughter out of a class for not dressing appropriately.
Part of me is on the side of Abby; the kids need to be wearing the right attire or they might get hurt. The incident highlights the extent to which these families will go to get their kids in the best school and succeed. As well as what they will put up with. You start to wonder—are they doing it for the kids, or for themselves.
I must admit that watching Dance Moms is a bit of a guilty pleasure. I enjoy seeing the dance routines and the moms definitely provide drama to the show, by defending their daughters as well as themselves, on a regular basis.
If you've ever wondered what goes on backstage with a handful of dance "stage moms", this show delivers.
