Reality TV at its Best: "One Born Every Minute"

Guest Post from Karla Robey, MadameDeals.com

One Born Every Minute is a real life reality show on Lifetime that takes place in Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.  The Labor and Delivery Unit of the hospital is a hot spot for exciting drama with a little bit of comedy sprinkled in just to keep things interesting.

Child birth is a different experience for every woman and One Born Every Minute proves this to be true.  Tonight's show highlights three different couples at  different stages in their lives as they begin their journey through the birthing process.  As family members trickle in and out of the rooms sharing opinions about everything from epidurals, breathing methods, the “cuteness” factor of babies, and the worthiness of one father to be it becomes apparent that everybody has an opinion and sometimes sharing them can cause undue stress on the mother, who let’s face it is the key factor in this particular situation.   Keeping the laboring mother at ease and stress free should be everyone’s top priority and this show sheds light on the fact that that does not always happen.

One Born Every Minute is reality in the purest form.  The hospital staff adds a bit of their own drama and comedy with the families and each other.  It is apparent that this staff loves what they are doing and take deep personal interest in each family and their situation.  Whether laughing or crying, the nurses and doctors not only give of themselves professionally but share in the emotional ride of the birthing process.  These folks give 100 percent of themselves creating a warm, inviting atmosphere for everyone involved.

At times during the program I found myself laughing out loud while other times the tears rolled down my cheeks especially as one couple in particular shares their story of past miscarriages and a baby boy being stillborn.  As this couple shares their painful story, I reflected back to 1996 when I too lost a baby and left the hospital empty handed.  As each couple shares their personal story openly and honestly through the lens of the ever present camera, I am in awe at their willingness to share such a personal, intimate piece of their life story.  Holding my breath right along with the mother as she pushes and works toward delivery my emotions get the best of me as I hear a newborn baby cry and for a moment I am taken back to the births of my own children so many years ago.

One Born Every Minute is reality television at its best.  Grab a bowl of popcorn, and maybe a girlfriend or two (I doubt the man in your life will be interested…as mine walked away rather quickly) and enjoy an hour full of drama, comedy, tears, laughs and cries.   One Born Every Minute Season 2 airs Tuesdays at 10/9c  on Lifetime.
