Sunday Night TV: "The Protector" Premiere

Guest post by Karla Robey, MadameDeals.com

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down in my chair, prop my feet up and spend an hour with my DVD player; something that as a mom, I do not get to do very often.  I popped in the series premiere of Lifetime Television’s “The Protector”,  grabbed a healthy snack and enjoyed a quiet escape from the routine I call life.  I was invited to screen a copy of this premiere and share my thoughts with the Lifetime Television viewers, which for a small town farm girl is quite exciting.  The bonus was that I loved this show and will continue watching it on a regular basis.

“The Protector” a new drama series (premiering Sunday, June 12 at 10pm/9c) is just what I needed to distract me and take my attention away from the whirling of the washing machine and ringing of the phone.  “The Protector” stars Ally Walker as Gina Sheppard, an LAPD homicide detective who is trying to raise her two boys and hold down a demanding stressful job.  This single mother gets help with her boys from her struggling brother Davey who adds a bit of light heartedness to the show and to the lives of his nephews.

While “The Protector” is a show based around homicide and detective work, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the writers ensure that the viewer gets a glimpse into the private lives of Sheppard, her family and co-workers as well.  This show not only highlights Sheppard’s job as a detective, but gives insight to her role as single mother to her boys and sister to her brother as well as a friend to her co-workers.  While Sheppard has an edge to her, the viewer will at times see her vulnerability.  Her quick wit and direct approach to finding the truth is an endearing quality for Sheppard.  Ally Walker does a great job portraying Sheppard showing the many facets of her character.  “The Protector" also stars, Tisha Campbell-Martin ("Rita Rocks," "My Wife and Kids") as Gloria’s partner Michelle Dulcett, Miguel Ferrer ("Crossing Jordan," "Traffic") as their boss Lieutenant Felix Valdez and Terrell Tilford ("Soul Food," "One Life to Live") as police officer Ramon “Romeo” Rush.

As moms, we often find ourselves at the end of the day so tired that we cannot imagine doing anything but going to sleep.  Quite often I find that I have so much on my mind, that no matter how tired I am I need an escape to take myself out of circulation for a while.  Often times, I need to find something to distract my thoughts and this show was just what I needed to accomplish that task. Sitting down in the quiet of my bedroom with a healthy snack watching “The Protector” was just what I needed to relax, unwind and be entertained.  Being a mother is a full time job.  No matter how old our children are, we will always be on duty.  My children are 18 and 12 and even though they are relatively self sufficient beings I am called to duty more often than not.

Taking the time to do something for oneself on a regular basis is essential in every mother’s life.  In order to be an efficient parent, wife, friend, worker, etc. we need to take time for ourselves to rejuvenate, refresh and renew.  When we do we will not only be better for our loved ones but will be more fulfilled within ourselves.  With today’s economy it is often difficult to justify spending extra money on treating ourselves, however, grabbing a snack and the remote and sitting down to watch “The Protector”, will allow you that  much needed break from mommy duty and you do not have to leave home to do it.
