Frugal Summer Vacations

I recently priced a family cruise, just out of curiosity, and nearly fell over. Frugal, they are not. Making summer vacation plans is not easy while on a budget. Especially since we are a family of six!

But we are still determined to enjoy a summer getaway, without breaking the bank. So we got creative, and decided to combine a business trip with a quick family vacation. We'll take the minivan and head south to the coast. While my husband sees a few clients, me and the kids will enjoy the local sites, followed by a family day at the beach. Our hotel and mileage will be mostly covered, and we will even have a kitchen to save money on food. Minimal cost, still lots of fun!

I realize that not everyone can take advantage of an opportunity like ours. So I am sharing some other ideas for saving money on a summer vacation this year.

• Even with the painfully rising cost of gas, for most families it still costs less to drive to your destination of choice. No luggage fees! Be sure to check out Angela's tips for saving money on gas.

• If you plan to eat out at your destination, be sure to check for a killer deal at local restaurants through Groupon or other daily deal sites in advance.
