7 Parenting Adages That Are Keeping Me (Slightly) Sane These Days
With an almost-four-year-old and an 11-week old tearing it up at home, these are the days when I sometimes get so frustrated, frazzled and fatigued that I can't quite think straight...and just want to crumple in tears.
Of course, I know that there are many families with way more kids, way more challenges, and way less help than I have...and yet, I still find the transition from one to two kids to be quite tough! (The fact that my 11-week old was born 8 weeks early—making her more like 3 weeks old—is just an additional stressor.)
So I find myself leaning HEAVILY on every axiom, cliche, quote or timeworn truth I can find. I pull one out of my mental quiver as soon as a wave of stress washes over me. And hopefully, the moment passes or I see the wisdom in the words and can keep on keepin' on.
Here are the the lucky seven—as trite as some may be, and as made-up as some others may be—that are keeping me afloat these days:
1. This too shall pass.
2. The days are long but the years are short. (This is actually written in ALL CAPS on our kitchen chalkboard!)
3. Breathe in. Breathe out. Repeat.
4. They're only young once.
5. Soon enough this will be a memory.
6. Don't worry, be happy.
7. It's just a phase.
