“Mom, Josh is copying me!”
How many times have you heard a variation of that today?
"Suzy won't stop copying me!"
"Mom, can you please tell Joey to not copy me!?"
"Why does Franky have to copy me?"
Now, I'm not refering to cheating here, but when our older kiddos complain that a younger brother or sister is copying them, we attempt to interpret the old saying - imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – sometimes to no avail. As a mom I seek to provide answers to this dilemma for our children, but it’s important for our children to understand that imitation is the way younger siblings learn… Repeating the alphabet after an older sibling recites it, and even learning how to say words correctly.
Sure, we are all unique individuals, capable of creating our own goals and making our own decisions, but our children also need to understand that, whatever their siblings’ intention, they are actually helping that sibling to learn new and wonderful things.
And, what older sibling wouldn’t want to do that? ;)
