Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy
For Amanda Knox (portrayed by Hayden Panettiere) her dream of studying abroad in Italy for 10 months was coming true but after only two months into her stay, tragedy struck when her roommate Meredith Kersher was found brutally murdered. As the story unfolds, the nightmare begins. Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy is based upon the 2007 true story of Amanda Knox, a U.S. citizen who finds herself being accused of killing her roommate in this true to life Lifetime original movie.
Amanda and her boyfriend Raffaele, quickly become prime suspects as superficial evidence begins to mount against them in Meredith’s murder. Amanda and Raffaele are telling one story until the pressure of Italian prosecutors and police quickly prompts Raffaele to change his account of what happened the night of the murder. Amanda undergoes hours of extensive questioning which proves to be enough to land herself in jail.
You’ll have to watch the premiere (on Monday, February 21 at 9pm et/pt) to see the rest but in my opinion, this story doesn’t seem to be told on the side of the Italian justice system or for Amanda’s side. Rather, Amanda’s ordeal seems to be told from a middle of the road perspective; on one hand I want to believe that Amanda is innocent but watching the account of Amanda’s actions puts a slice of doubt in my mind.
As a parent, I can’t imagine what this ordeal must be like for Amanda’s family as this tragic story continues to play out in the Italian courts even today. As a mother you want to believe that your child is never capable of harming or hurting another person but we parents like to live in a bubble and believe that our children will never grow up, have sex, experiment with drugs, or have a functional life without us prompting and pushing them every step of the way. Yet, our children will grow up to do many of these things and all we can do is hope that we’ve placed the right values and morals in them to become decent adults and caring human beings.
I don’t know that I believe in Amanda’s professed innocence. Amanda’s mother (played by Marcia Gay Harden) rushes to her daughter’s side and is unwavering in her belief of her daughter. I would like to believe that put in those shoes, I too would stand steadfast with my child but after some of Amanda’s reported actions in the film… Well, you’ll just have to watch for yourself!
Amanda Knox: Murder on Trial in Italy premieres on Lifetime February 21 at 9pm et/pt. Lifetime will also be airing an hour long documentary depicting what the justice system in another country is like and how foreigners who are convicted of a crime in another country fare in foreign courts.
Who will be tuning in to watch the drama unfold with me?
