Encouraging Kids to Watch TV?
I can’t get my two and half year old to watch television and it’s frustrating the hell out of me! I’ve tried everything – “Thomas the Tank Engine”, “Mickey Mouse Club”, “Blue’s Clues” – you name it. When my six year old watches television, a bomb could go off and he wouldn’t notice. Not so much with her.
I thought I was really getting somewhere the other morning when she got into bed with me and asked me to turn the tube on. But within five seconds, there she was – sticking her fingers up my nose and putting her baby doll’s feet in my ears. She’s just too damn busy and curious to watch the big glowing box in front of her!
I’m not apologetic about how I feel – plenty of parents will criticize and tell me that it’s bad parenting to encourage my kids to watch television. But I’m not pushing them to watch for hours at a time – just a half an hour here and there so I can actually get something done in the house. And have I mentioned that my son pretty much learned the alphabet from “Sesame Street”?
Rainy days? COME ON. You’d be lying if you said you didn’t turn a movie on after being stuck in the house all day. The kids zone out, the adults stop yelling at them for the hundredth time to stop hitting, screaming, whining and drawing on the walls. It’s win-win!
If the TV thing doesn’t work out with my daughter, I may have to resort to Angry Birds!
