Fall Family Fun
As a work-at-home mom, the school year brings mixed emotions. I value a return to calm, scheduled work hours, yet I miss the time with my children. There’s also something magical about that “anything can happen” feeling of summer and last minute getaways. Though the summer vacation season has ended, fall is actually a perfect time of year for families to enjoy staycations in the crisp autumn air. Whether it’s visiting a local farm or traveling to a nearby city, there are endless opportunities to spend time together making family memories close to home.
Pumpkin Picking – Forget grabbing a pumpkin from that display in front of your grocery store! Find a nearby choose-your-own pumpkin farm and head out into the field to pick your own. This is an activity my family enjoys yearly, and it has been fun to watch our kids choose larger pumpkins each year as they themselves grow!
Apple Picking – There’s nothing like fresh apple cider, apple butter, and picking your own apples to take home to bake a delicious apple pie. Many farms host special weekend activities for children that include crafts, so be sure to check the websites of local apple orchards near you.
Corn Mazes – Once you’ve filled up on apple cider and chosen the perfect Jack-O-Lantern pumpkin, head out to the corn maze to try your hand at finding your way to the end. I’ll never forget the fall when my son first had the confidence to run ahead of me in the maze. Thankfully his giggles led me to him quickly.
Hayrides – My new home owner’s association, my local shopping center, and nearby churches all hold hayrides at various weekends throughout the fall. Check your local mailer for hayrides that are a part of local activities. My personal favorite is the local hayride that includes scarecrow making for the kids, all in the parking lot of the area mall!
Hiking – October is the perfect time to spend a day hiking with your family while enjoying the gorgeous fall colors. Make a whole day of it by finding a family friendly restaurant to try and enjoy the fresh fall air after a day of exercising as a family.
Local Festivals – Autumn is prime time for local festivals ranging from community fairs to state agricultural festivals. Growing up, the community fair was the biggest event of the fall and an opportunity to check out the biggest pumpkins, the most delicious preserves, and beautifully sewn quilts. Challenge your family to attend a different festival each Saturday of the fall enjoying the local flavor of surrounding areas.
So where will this weekend take you?
