Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss! Words to Live By for All Ages
Whether you are young or old, there’s a good chance that Dr. Seuss has captured your heart or imagination at some point in your life. I have fond memories of reading about The Grinch, Thing One and Thing Two, Red Fish and Blue Fish, Green Eggs and Ham and The Cat in the Hat with my parents and my favorite teachers in school.
And now that I’m a parent, I have a whole new appreciation for the humor and wisdom in all of Dr. Seuss’ books. Not only does his writing offer a giggle and a wink, but it offers words to live by. Here are some of my favorite quotes – words to live by for all ages:
Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!
“When you think things are bad, when you feel sour and blue, when you start to get mad…you should do what I do! Just tell yourself, Duckie, you’re really quite lucky! Some people are much more…oh, muchly much-much more unlucky than you!”
- Did I Ever Tell You How Lucky You Are?
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”
- I Can Read With My Eyes Shut!
“A person's a person, no matter how small.”
- Horton Hears a Who!
“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”
- Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go!
“Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”
- How the Grinch Stole Christmas
“From there to here, from here to there, funny things are everywhere!”
- One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish
“For a host, above all, must be kind to his guests.”
- Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose
“And the turtles, of course...all the turtles are free, as turtles and, maybe, all creatures should be.”
- Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories
“I know it is wet and the sun is not sunny, but we can have lots of good fun that is funny.”
- The Cat in the Hat
“This may not seem very important, I know. But it is. So I’m bothering telling you so.”
