Have Your Luxuries Changed Since Becoming a Mom?
I often refer to my life in stages:
1. Pre-Mom Days
2. Mom Days
It's funny... I'm the same person, but completely different. My personality's the same. My humor's the same. My likes and dislikes are the same. My taste in food is the same. My love of the sun is the same.
What's so different about me? It's my luxuries.
My luxuries before my sons? Oh... you know. Dinner at the chicest restaurants. Meeting up with girlfriends all the time. Splurging on that Louis Vuitton wallet. Planning a vacation last minute because we just need to get away! Reading Vogue Magazine cover to cover. It was things like that... actual luxuries for me in my pre-Mom days.
But now? Oh, my luxuries have changed. The simplest things are the biggest luxuries to me now. Things I completely took for granted before.
Here are my TOP 5 luxuries since becoming a mom...
1. Shaving my legs
Oh, yes! Shaving is one of the biggest luxuries of all! Before I had William (my oldest son) I would shave my legs every other day. Then... well, parenthood came into my life. When I shaved, it was usually for a reason. LOL... and that's not always the best way to be. Now when I shave my legs, it's truly a luxury. I appreciate the soft, smooth skin!
2. Showering while the boys are sleeping
I don't know about you, but usually when I'm showering, I have little heads that keep popping in asking me questions. "Mom, where's my blankie?" or "Mom, Ben won't let me watch him play on the Wii!" The comments range... so when the boys are sleeping at night, I sneak a shower. It's quiet. It's peaceful. And I'm not trying to rush out as fast as I possibley can. Before I was a mother, I never would have believed anyone telling me that a simple shower would be a luxury one day...
3. Coffee at home
There was a time before I had my sons that I used to hate making coffee at home. All I wanted was to be able to afford a cup of coffee every single day at Starbuck's. I remember living in NYC and wishing that someday I'd be able to buy my coffee out every morning. Well, fast forward 7 years... if I have to go out and buy a coffee, I'm bummed! It's such a luxury to wake up early and make a pot of coffee while the boys are just waking up and coming downstairs. It's super relaxing and so calm.
4. Friday night on the couch
Oh, yes... this is probably one of my biggest luxuries of all! There's nothing like having no plans and no place to be. Before I had kids, I used to make plans almost every single night. We'd meet friends out, go to the movies, go out to dinner, go on vacation... we'd constantly be on the go. Now? With 4 kids. Oh, mama mia... when we have nothing to do, it's a luxury. I love being able to sit on the couch on a Friday night with my husband and watch a movie and just zone out... it's a luxury that is priceless!
5. Watching the news
I cannot believe this is a luxury now, but it is! It's so funny, too because before I had my sons, I would watch the Today Show every single morning, or at least catch the first 30 minutes. Now my mornings are filled with Disney and Nick. Jr... so whenever I have the time or the ability to catch the morning news, it's a luxury. There's something about starting my day off with Matt Lauer that I just love! It's a luxury!
You know what all of this has taught me? Motherhood really grounds you. You appreciate more. Your happiness increases in bounds.
And as for me right now, I'm off to shower and shave my legs!
