"Hot Sauce Mom" - The Secret's Not in the Sauce
Last week Jessica Beagley, otherwise known as the "Hot Sauce Mom," was convicted of child abuse for forcing her seven year old adopted son to ingest hot sauce as part of a punishment. She also used putting him in a cold shower as one of her techniques for teaching him a lesson after bad behavior.
Beagley will not actually serve any of her 180 day jail sentence, nor will she pay any of her $2500 fine because the judge in the case has instead placed her on three year's probation. Her attorney's response was that no one would be checking on her anyway.
So is it absolutely crazy for a mother to use ingesting painful things or enduring uncomfortable showers as a punishment?
Of course it is.
But if you look into the case further you'll see that the situation goes far beyond a jar of hot sauce or the occasional icy shower. We've all been made to eat what was served to us, even if it was disgusting and covered in ketchup just to be edible. And who hasn't had to take a cold shower at the sleep-away camp our parents made us go to because they thought it would be "fun."
In my opinion the real problem is that this mom not only knew that what she was doing was wrong, but she also filmed it to show other people how far beyond appropriate she had gone in disciplining her child. For me, the real sign of an issue is not that she turned to some off-the-wall punishment in a time of desperation. I've seen parents come up with ridiculous ideas that are far outside of the "go to time out" box. However, this mom filmed her punishments in order to be on television. In fact, the reason why she was caught was because she sent the video into the Dr. Phil show.
The real crime in this case is that a mother is using her struggling son to gain fame. And it looks like it has worked because here she is in yet another online story. For that she belongs in jail...
