Last Minute Halloween Costumes
It’s the week of Halloween and you realize that you never got around to taking your children shopping for a costume. Maybe you’ve been out there trying to find the “right” costume, and you simply couldn’t track down what your children were looking for this year. Or the absolute worst – perhaps you thought you were heading into the holiday set to go when suddenly your child is refusing to wear the costume you bought or made.
What do you do? It’s time for a last minute costume!
If you take a moment and look around your house, you may be surprised at the costumes just waiting to be created. While there’s always the old white sheet cut into a ghost, here are some more creative last minute costume ideas to make any parent the hero of Halloween:
Athlete: Dig around for old uniforms from older siblings, put some black stripes under kiddo’s eyes, and suddenly you‘ve got a star athlete!
Flower: Begin with an all-green outfit for the stem and leaves, then cut out construction paper petals. Attach the petals in a circle around the neck and shoulder of your child’s shirt. Want to take it to the next level? Spritz on some floral perfume!
Fairy Princess: What little girl doesn’t have a tutu and tiara in their dress up box? Grab an old pair of nylons and a couple wire hangers to create fairy wings. Use glue and glitter from your crafting supplies to make those gossamer wings sparkle.
Beauty Queen: Mom, do you have an old cocktail dress with a short hemline? Using that same tiara from the dress up box, you can turn your baby girl into a beauty queen just in time for Halloween. Use a flashy scarf to cinch the waistline and yes, toilet paper with Little Miss Beauty Queen written on it in marker will do just fine for a sash.
Mummy: If you have a few minutes and a roll or two of extra toilet paper, a mummy is probably the easiest last minute costume you can find. Begin at the shoes and work up attaching some loose sections for that “aged” look. You don’t want your little goblin to look like he was mummified recently!
Baby: If your child is like mine, they’ve still got footy pajamas in their drawer. Add pigtails, a blanky, and a pacifier on a string and you’ve got one of the easiest last minute costumes around…baby!
Farmer: While this last minute costume requires that you have a pair of bib overalls in your home that the child in need can wear, it really becomes simple after that. A flannel shirt or even a plaid dress shirt paired with overalls and just a little straw from your front porch Halloween display makes a pretty great farmer costume! It’s a bonus if you have a bandana in the house to hang out of your child’s back pocket or tie around their neck.
Cat or Dog: Animals are some of the easiest last minute costumes to create. Begin with a monochromatic outfit in either a cat or dog color. Have a little extra time and want to be creative? Use construction paper to cut out stripes for your cat or patches for your dog’s fur. For a short, stubby tail take a white or black crew sock and fill it with crumbled paper, then safety pin it to the bottom of your child’s shirt. For a long tale, use a tube sock or even multiple tube socks pinned together. Again, use crumbled paper to create a puffier tale. For the ears, cut out either triangles (cat) or rounded triangles (dog) or even folded over triangles (floppy ears) and tape them to a head band. The final touch is eyeliner whiskers and a pink lipstick nose.
Favorite character: If at the last minute your child insists on going as a favorite television or storybook character, don’t panic. Many character websites offer printables, including masks. Simple print out a mask, tie on a piece of string and go. In the end, this may be the easiest and make your child the most happy!
And here’s the part where I admit that just days before Halloween, I still don’t know what my son is going to be. We’ve walked through the stores several times and nothing seems to catch his interest. He’s told me he wants to be everything from a hot dog to an M&M to a bottle of ketchup, so it looks like Sunday afternoon, I’m going to be reading this post, wondering if he would make a better mummy or farmer.
