Milwaukee's Shocking Co-Sleeping Ad: Yea or Nay?
Remember the ad campaign (and I could be aging myself here) with the eggs in the frying pan showing “your brain on drugs”? It was one of the first shock value public service announcements that I remember seeing. But now, provocative ads are becoming more and more popular – I can’t BEAR watching the one about emphysema as a result of smoking cigarettes.
The most recent one causing waves is an anti co-sleeping campaign being run by the Milwaukee Health Department. If you haven’t seen it already, it’s a poster of an adorable baby sleeping in an adult bed next to a Freddy Kruger worthy butcher knife. The tagline reads, “"Your baby sleeping with you can be just as dangerous."
It’s pretty graphic – but I have to be honest, I don’t have a problem with it. There are some real dummies out there who really need to have things spelled out for them.
According to the health department’s website, the second-leading cause of mortality in Milwaukee is SIDS, or sudden infant death syndrome, which often results from “unsafe sleep”.
It’s tempting, I know. It’s 3am and your baby is crying, you are so tired you could cry. You know that if you just throw him into bed with you, there’s a good chance he will quiet down. I tried it once and I spent the whole time staring at my son because I was convinced he was either going to fall off the bed and split his head open, or he was going to suffocate.
Is it worth it for a few extra minutes of sleep to lose your kid forever? I think not.
