The Mother Daughter Bond
My mom worked from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. every day when I was a child with breaks to have lunch and dinner. I spent my days doing fun things like racing RC cars off of homemade ramps, driving a four wheeler through cornfields, and running from backyard to backyard with the neighborhood kids. But no matter how much fun I had during the day, when my mom walked in the door at 8:05, I ran to her. I had things to tell her, shows to watch with her, games to play.
As a mother, I’ve experienced those same moments with my children. There are certain times that nothing else will do – not daddy, a favorite toy, or even the distraction of technology – and my daughter just wants me. Tonight was one of those moments. I was working hosting an online event, and she had to wait a full hour for me to help her find her lovie. Her father had ripped the house apart looking for that little guy, but she knew that I’d make it right, and of course I did.
At times that “I need mom” bond that children have can be overwhelming. I realize now that it was probably exhausting for my mom who had just spent twelve hours treating sick patients to be bombarded with questions and stories and hugs. There are times when I just want to yell, “STOP!!” and find a cozy chair in a quiet corner. But there are also moments, like when my daughter and I can say “Noah is being REALLY naughty right now” with just a glance to each other, that I wouldn’t trade that closeness for anything in the world.
I know that as my children grow, our relationships will change. My son will probably always be mommy’s boy. But I really see my daughter becoming one of my closest friends. My mom is still my biggest champion and one of my closest friends, and I still love to talk to her at the end of the day. I can only hope that my daughter continues to feel the same way about me.
