Murder To Save Your Baby?
What would you do to protect your child? Would you lie, steal, or cheat? Would you commit murder?
That is the question that Sarah McKinley, an 18-year-old mom from Oklahoma City, had to ask herself when two intruders burst into her home on New Year’s Eve. Home alone with her 3-month-old baby, after recently burying her husband, who died of cancer, this young mom heard two men trying to break into her house. Grabbing her 12-gauge shotgun and her son she ran to hide in the bedroom and called 911. When one of the intruders crashed through the door with a knife, Sarah pulled the trigger, and ultimately killed her assailant.
Ten years ago, if you asked me this question, I would have given you a politically correct answer based on my pacifist point of view - BUT I wasn’t a mom. Now, as a mom to 3, I can tell you without a doubt that I would have done whatever was necessary to protect any one of my children. Truly, I would never want to harm another person, but if I had to choose between saving my child from harm or causing harm to another, my choice is clear. My child wins that one hands down. As a mother, my responsibility is to my children; to teach them, meet their needs, raise them to be responsible citizens, and to keep them safe, no matter what the consequences.
It is horrible that Sarah McKinley was forced to make that choice. However, I completely agree with her, and authorities, that she made the best decision. This just proves that you shouldn’t mess with a momma protecting her baby, no matter what the age.
Do you think Sarah McKinley made the best choice? What would you have done?
