My Fitness Clean Start for 2011
As I sit here at my computer, balancing on my exercise ball, my husband is in the next room assembling a contraption that resembles a medieval torture device. The box proclaims it to be a combination exercise bike and elliptical, but all I care about is that it will be easy enough to use and close enough to the morning news that I will actually get on it three to five mornings a week.
This year I have vowed to make a clean start in my fitness life...a life that currently does not exist.
I know that it will be a long journey, but I'm taking two major steps to kick this change of pace off right. The first part of the plan involves that piece of exercise equipment. By purchasing equipment for my home, I no longer have the excuse that the gym I used to belong to doesn't provide child care and doesn't open early enough for me to work out before my husband goes to work. I also found something that I've used in the past, so presumably I won't be facing such a steep learning curve.
The other step begins in this first week of January and doesn't end until well into February. I've made the decision to take charge of my health by visiting all of the doctors I have been avoiding from my dentist right down to my family care physician. I'll be undergoing a complete physical with blood work - something I made my husband do three years ago when we turned thirty - ending with a full teeth cleaning and x-rays in February, and visiting a variety of specialists in between. And I'm happy to say that when my doctors ask me what I'm doing about my health, I'll have an answer.
That is, if my husband ever figures out how to put that crazy thing together...
