National Foster Care Month
May is a busy time for many families with Mother’s Day, Memorial Day picnics, and planning for the upcoming summer vacation. I find myself running from one thing to the next, worrying about what’s down the road and not stopping to think about the here and now. But for many children, May is the most important month of the year because it is National Foster Care Month.
National Foster Care Month shines a light on the thousands of children and youth in the U.S. foster care system. With the work of organizations such as the Children’s Bureau, AdoptUsKids and the Ad Council, National Foster Care Month is supporting those advocates and professionals who have decreased the total number of children waiting for a safe and permanent family from more than half a million to 463,000 (between 2003 and the end of 2008). Together we can continue to highlight the importance of finding homes for those children still waiting to find their forever family.
I have been blessed with a stable, loving family and am fortunate enough to be able to provide the same for my children. Because not every child has had this chance, it is so critical to spread the word about National Foster Care Month. To learn more about how you can get involved, please visit Adopt Us Kids. Together we can all make a difference!
