Nutritious Summer Snacks for Kids
While one of the joys of summertime is the freedom to relax from the rules and schedules of the school year, it can become easy to overindulge in treats, turning summer fun into an unhealthy time. But it is possible to provide your kids with quick and easy snacks that embrace the spirit of summer and are also nutritious! Try some of these enjoyable treats to keep your kids and their bodies happy and healthy.
Stock the Fridge – Keep healthy finger foods in the fridge for easy access when the kids need to cool down and fuel up. Divide carrot and celery sticks as well as pepper and cucumber slices into snack portions in easy to open containers. And don’t forget to place a light dip near the veggies for the kids to grab. Also consider keeping low fat cheese sticks or string cheese handy for a satisfying mid-day protein boost.
Don’t Forget the Freezer – Many stores carry popsicle molds in various sizes and shapes. Start each week by freezing a variety of 100% juices and skip the sugary packaged treats. You might also try mixing your favorite smoothie recipe then freezing it in pop form for the kids – and you! – to enjoy throughout the week. While you’re stocking up the freezer, slice bananas and strawberries, toss in some blueberries for good measure, and freeze them in a kid-friendly container.
Make What’s Handy, Healthy – Part of the lure of unhealthy snacks is how easy they are to grab and go. Be sure to place fresh fruit where your kids can not only reach, but also in a high traffic area that they can easily see. Sometimes out of sight is out of mind for a hungry and busy child!
