Raising Teenage Motherhood Awareness: The Pregnancy Pact, a Lifetime Original Movie
I admit that I’m kind of bold and outspoken in my views on teenagers and sex. I’m a firm believer that simply educating your teenager does not give them license to have sex. Moreover, it gives them the tools to make well informed and responsible decisions. Still teens will do what teens do.
Can we teach abstinence and force stop kids from having sex? I don’t think so and Bristol Palin is a prime example of that.
Many moms won’t agree with my way of thinking but, I’d like to hope that by educating rather than forbidding my teenagers they are better prepared for making these life changing adult decisions.
And that sets the back drop for the Lifetime Original Movie, The Pregnancy Pact premiering January 23, 9 pm EST. Inspired by a true story, The Pregnancy Pact raises questions about teenagers, sex and the cost of making the decision of having sex and becoming a parent at such a young age.
I was able to preview The Pregnancy Pact and during the movie, I recalled the actual news stories from Time Magazine surrounding the teenage girls that the story is based upon. Albeit a small glimpse of what a teen mother goes through and how “the pact” affected their lives, the movie raises some important ethical and moral questions.
Is there a right way to talk to our teenagers about sex?
Which is the better route; abstinence or education?
What can I do as a parent?
None of these questions have easy answers but at the very heart of this movie are larger issues than young girls getting pregnant. I simply can’t recommend this movie enough, for parents and for teenagers.
The Pregnancy Pact boasts an all star cast including; Nancy Travis, Camryn Manheim and Thora Birch. It’s a must see for every parent. If you can’t watch it with your teens, DVR or Tivo it so you can watch it together later – and talk about what you see. Talk about the issues the movie raises and what you and your teen can do to ensure they’re not a parent before they’re ready.
