School Uniforms Contain GPS and Text Parents When Students Are Late
My son wears a uniform, and I support the use of uniforms in schools for a variety of reasons. It can keep inappropriate clothing out of school, and have kids focus on learning rather than the latest fashion or fads, however, a school in Brazil is now having students wear uniforms with embedded GPS chips similar to those used in pet trackers. Has this gone too far?
The GPS chips are embedded under the school’s coat of arms or in one of the sleeves, so all 20,000 grade school students are now tracked throughout the day. The reasoning behind this is that many students were ditching school. Parents were shocked to find out how often their children were absent or late to school, so now they are sent a text message as soon as their child enters the school grounds, or if they are late by 20 minutes or more.
According to Yahoo News, the government in Brazil already spent $670,000 designing and manufacturing these shirts, but plans to make more so that all 43,000 public school students from ages 4 to 14 will have GPS-chipped shirts starting in 2013.
Let’s get real.
Why on earth do we need a GPS on a child like he or she is an animal? And what happened to the teacher just taking attendance to see who is absent, or tell the front office when a student is late? When I was in school, attendance was always taken at the beginning of class, and if you weren’t there, your parents were called that morning to inquire about it. As a matter of fact, this practice still goes on at my son’s school, so I don’t understand how parents can’t know if their kids are playing hooky.
Plus, does this really solve anything? If kids are going to ditch, and no one is paying attention to anything but a GPS chip, then all they need to do is leave the uniform at school. The hefty price tag on these GPS-chipped uniforms doesn’t justify an easily fooled system.
What do you think? Would you want your kids to wear GPS-chip school uniforms? Would it cut down on absenteeism in schools?
