Silly Word Mix-Ups
My husband and I are big fans of pop culture, so we tend to joke about episodes of favorite old television shows. One of our favorites includes a character saying, "supposebly" instead of "supposedly," and it still cracks us up when one of us switches the word on purpose. Another favorite? "Moo point" instead of "moot point" - priceless!
Who knew that having children would provide hours and hours of similar entertainment?
Our children have very full vocabularies, and from a very early age they have enjoyed mimicking the things that we both say and do. While they generally use the words in the right context, they from time to time don't get the word quite right. Seeing a very serious little face and hearing the wrong word said emphatically is sometimes enough to send us into tears of laughter.
One of my personal favorites is the word "atmediately," which was invented by my now six year old daughter. She went through a very bossy phase around the age of three or four, and it involved her telling my husband and I where we needed to be and when. If she needed us to get or do something very quickly she would yell, "I need a glass of milk brought to the table...ATMEDIATELY!" For the longest time she simply didn't believe us that the word was actually immediately! And thankfully, she has also significantly toned down the bossiness. Phew!
Another favorite comes from my son. He loves to accompany his daddy to the grocery store to pick up the weekly essentials and meal planning items, and while he understands what each item is for, he isn't always sure of the names. One time during a bout with a tummy ache, the poor little guy asked for some Lanta. We had no idea what he wanted! We asked again and again, "What do you want us to get you?" He finally said Your Lanta! For tummy aches! Having heard the name Mylanta, he assumed it was, well, mine!
