Teaching Your Kids Good Manners with Merrilee Mannerly
From Mary Cashman and Cynthia Whipple, authors of Merrilee Mannerly.
While we would love to say that our own children’s good manners inspired us to write Merrilee Mannerly & Her Magnificent Manners, the truth is the idea came out of a conversation about our mothers. Merrilee Mannerly was born on Mother’s Day, an especially poignant day for us. Although we met at Trinity College, practiced law together and lived in the same town for years, what really brought us together was our shared memories of our mothers.
Even though our mothers are no longer with us, their every day wisdom continues to echo in our minds as we try to teach our own children the core values of kindness, gratitude and thoughtfulness. With children, showing is always better than telling, so we developed Merrilee Mannerly, an 8 year old girl we hoped children would emulate because of her love of good manners. In the story, Merrilee teaches Princess Posy, a princess from a land of no manners, good manners in a fun and funny way, always reinforcing her motto “Good manners are always in fashion!”
