Is Technology Making My Child A Narcissist
With all the immediate gratification with our digital cameras, iPhones, video phones and the internet are we creating little self-absorbed monsters? My kids are only 2 and 3, but I do worry about this. Especially when my children start to scream, “I want to see, I want to see,” after every photo and won’t calm down until they see it.
I know they are just being curious kids, after all who wouldn’t be fascinated by something flashing and then seconds later you can see an image of yourself on the screen, it’s like magic!
What did we do back in the day? Oh yeah, we actually had to wait, we had to be patient to see memories of special occasions. And not only did we have wait to get the film developed, we had to wait to finish the roll, so maybe we wouldn’t even see our memories until 2 special occasions later. I know, I know I sound like an old person.
My husband laughs at me, and says, “Just like you walked 10 miles to school, up hills and through snow and imagine this, used a rotary phone that was attached to a wall!”
Well, I didn’t walk through snow, but I did use a rotary phone! Okay, okay I get it, I’m a little old fashioned, I know things change, but I think it’s important for kids not to get carried away. I don’t think it’s so much about the technology, as it is about appreciating the fact that you can’t get everything right away, that it’s important to learn the value of patience and not to be too self-absorbed about how you appear.
And part of it is my fault. With all the technology, WE or I have been taking non-stop photos and videos of our kids since they were born and who are we kidding, even in the womb! With the 3D Ultrasounds we could see our kids faces before we even gave birth.
I’m torn. A part of me loves that my children are good with technology and that my 3 year old figured out how to use my iPhone when I wasn’t looking. I have to admit I thought it was cute and so amazing that he knows how to shoot his own video and then play it back. I know technology will just be a part of our kids lives and I wouldn’t want mine to be left out. But I don’t like my kids playing with my phone unless it’s for a specific reason- doctor’s office waiting room, traveling etc.
So I know it’s not a big deal now, but with Facebook, YouTube, reality shows, it’s only going to get worse, especially when they are teenagers! What do you think?
