One Born Every Minute
Top 5 Must-Have Items Post Baby Delivery
Sad to say, you'll be needing these items and probably will wish you didn't!
But's that's the cold hard truth and I promise you'd rather buy them in advance versus running out to the drug store with a newborn or sending your husband to handle the purchase of some of these very personal female products.
1. A stool softener like Colace or Pericolace.
Gross, right? But if you are like me and have an episiotomy and/or tear during childbirth and have a rip the size of the Grand Canyon you'll want this!
2. Breast Pads
A little less gross but leakage does occur. The amount varies for every Mom I know but most Moms tend to leak a bit in the early days when their breast milk is coming in and their body hasn't regulated perfectly with baby.
3. A breast pump
You may plan on only exclusively breast feeding from the breast. But the best laid plans of mice and men often fail miserably. For whatever the reason, being prepared with a breast pump ahead of time is the way to go. I was not prepared and we ended up needing to rent one when my daughter was born 4 weeks early and unable to figure out how to suck & swallow. I needed to pump so that I could feed her droplets from a baby bottle and also supplement with formula to insure she was getting the calories she needed.
4. A ton of "Sanitary" Napkins aka Maxi Pads
Um, yeah you'll basically have your period for the next 4-6 weeks. And you won't be able to use a tampon. Somehow I neglected to realize this one too!
5. Stock the freezer and cupboard with snacks and healthy goodies
It might just be a while before you really feel comfortable to run out to the grocery store with your little bundle. Especially if he or she is born prematurely or in December! So stock up way in advance so you'll be set for a while! And if you breastfeed, you'll probably find yourself ravenous that first month and eating far more than normal.
So as the boy scouts say, Be Prepared!
